Anxiety & Depression Support using Naturopathy & Herbs

Recent clinical trials have proven the use of herbal medicine to be effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety.

Even if you are under the care of a GP, Psychologist or on antidepressants, our Naturopaths can help you to balance your nervous system with tailored herbal medicine and dietary advice. There's a lot of natural remedies for depression and anxiety out there. The expert advice of a trained Naturopath will ensure that you receive evidence based, safe natural therapy for depression or anxiety.

Naturopaths also recommend foods that can be eaten to calm the mind and balance blood sugar levels, resulting in more stable moods.

We use low G.I. eating plans to help our clients boost their mood and naturally treat anxiety. Diet plays a huge role in your emotional ups and downs and the right balance of foods can give you control over your moods, reducing cravings for stimulants like coffee and sugary foods and most importantly providing the body with the nutrients it needs to produce serotonin the “happy” brain chemical.

Research from UQ on herbs effective for the treatment of Anxiety & Depression

University of Queensland research has found a traditional extract of Kava, a medicinal plant from the South Pacific, to be safe and effective natural medication for reducing anxiety.

Published in the journal of Psychopharmacology are the results of a world-first clinical trial which found that a water-soluble extract of Kava was effective in treating anxiety and improving mood.

The Kava was prescribed in the form of tablets supplied by Queensland company MediHerb.

Lead researcher Jerome Sarris, a PhD candidate from UQ's School of Medicine said the placebo-controlled study found Kava to be an effective and safe treatment option for people with chronic anxiety and varying levels of depression.

“We've been able to show that Kava offers a natural alternative for the treatment of anxiety, and unlike some pharmaceutical options, has less risk of dependency and less potential of side effects,” Mr Sarris said.

Our Naturopaths use herbal medicines made by Mediherb which were used in this promising clinical trial.

Kava is just one of many effective natural medications for anxiety. There are many other natural remedies for the treatment of both anxiety and depression. It is very important to be prescribed the right herbs for your health and also that won't interfere with your medications such as anti depressants or the oral contraceptive pill. What works for one person may not be the best option for you.

To find out which herbs may best reduce your depression and anxiety, please book in for an individual consultation.

What to expect from your Naturopathy consultation

The best way to understand the cause of dysfunction in the body is to take a comprehensive health history. Your Naturopath will spend an hour with you at your first consultation asking questions about all the systems in your body – this gives us the framework to understand which areas of your body are working well and which areas need help.

Your Naturopath will give you an evaluation of your health, a plan for your treatment and then ask you in which order of priority you would like to treat your health issues. You will receive a hands on treatment and be given proactive recommendations to take home to improve your health.
